Top 5 Ways to Celebrate a First Birthday

So your baby has almost reached their first birthday! Where did that time go? Five minutes ago they were sleeping all day and partying all night, leaving you forgetting that you ever slept a whole night before they arrived. Now they are a real little character, with smiles and giggles and wonderful personality. You’re thinking, how do you I celebrate this milestone? What can we do to mark this ever so special first birthday? Here are The Cow Shed Studio’s top five things to do:

1) Have a party! Even if it is just you and your baby, get dressed up, make a birthday tea (that’s what my mum always called it) sing happy birthday and blow out that solitary candle with vigour! Just because you’re a parent now, doesn’t mean you have forgotten how to party like it’s 1999!

2) Plant a tree. Not only is this a great way to mark this magnificent occasion, but it had a great environmental impact too. Your tiny baby, will see their tree grow alongside themself – which is, I have to say, pretty darn cool.

3) Adopt a star! You can get some awesome versions of this now, where you get a lovely print, with your child’s star, alongside their constellation, marked with your baby’s birth date. You can look up at the night sky on this day, every year, and pretend you are Prof Brian Cox, or Sir Patrick Moore – what a pair of legends to associate your little one with. There are lots of different places you can buy these on the internet – this one isn’t a recommendation, but it did make me smile when the homepage opened!

4) Paint a picture. You could have your very own artist of the future, and they don’t even know it yet. You can pick up literal blank canvases from your local art supplier, hand over a brush and some paints and see what happens! This could be the first of a curated collection, proudly displayed in your home, growing with each birthday.

5) Have a cake smash session with us! These are a brilliant way for your baby to get messy (if they want to!) and to document their fabulous personalities. They are such fun, and are a lovely way to grab this memory with both hands, and put it on the wall forever. Photos from these sessions will be perfect for dotting around the room at the 18th birthday party in years to come too….  They really are priceless! (although – to find out the prices, have a look here)

I hope we’ve given you some great ideas, it would be wonderful to hear some of yours! Let me know in the comments, and if you want to come and celebrate with me, I’d love to have you in the studio!
